Peter Sparre

British Steamers on 36 Plates 1889-1936

This is a scheme for a coffee table book by Peter Sparre, a world authority and naval draftsman of steamships.

The book seeks to portray what was the golden age of British shipbuilding with scale drafts and plans of ships both fantasy and real. The central core is 34 liners and 4 packets.  The most accurate and highly detailed series of steamships ever executed. One of these ships is the R.M.S. Atlantis, the artist’s conception of the ultimate steamship. These ships, drawn from builder’s plans, cover worldwide routes. The 8 liners to go on the end sheets are of lesser scale and details.  In addition are plans and cutaways of the Titanic and Atlantis.

Of the 34 liners, 16 will be foldouts, the plans and cutaways total 11 foldouts. The Queen Mary and the 2 colored cutaways may well be gatefolds.

The rest of the drawings are fantasy ships, except the Titanic perspective view.

The pages in the book will measure 12 by 18 inches which means the series of 36 plates will be downscaled from 1”=24’ to 1”=36’.

This will be the definitive book on the steamship.
